ELYU Herald - The Pulse of La Union

According to the PGLU and official municipal records, Bacnotan was established as one of the original 12 towns of La Union in 1850. The municipality, which covers a land area of 6,507 hectares, is currently classified as a first-class municipality with a population of 38,430 residents.

The local government is led by Mayor Divina C. Fontanilla, supported by Vice Mayor Francisco Angelito L. Fontanilla and a council of 10 members. The town is divided into 47 barangays and generates an average annual income of Php 60,335,000.00.

Located 284 kilometers from Manila, the town serves as a transit hub for the Manila-Ilocos bus route. It is home to the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) main campus in Sapilang, which hosts the National Apiculture Research, Training and Development Institute (NARTDI) and the Sericulture Research Development Institute. These institutions support local research in beekeeping and silk production.

Historically, the town is recognized for its role in resistance efforts during the Spanish-American War and World War II, particularly at the Baroro Bridge. Notable landmarks include the La Union Centennial Tree in Barangay Carcarmay, which was planted in 1896 and is certified by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The municipality hosts the annual Honey Festival from December 27 to 30. Other significant local observances include the feast of St. Michael the Archangel on September 29 and the feast of St. Joseph the Worker on May 1.
