Sixty young residents of Bacnotan, La Union recently gained essential lifesaving skills through the LGU’s Nippers Program. The initiative, held on March 7, 2026, at Barangay Tammocalao’s shoreline, aimed to prepare participants for emergency situations.

The program was led by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) in collaboration with Surf Life Saving Philippines. Its goal is to cultivate a new generation of lifesavers and bolster community safety efforts in Bacnotan.

Mayor Divine Fontanilla highlighted the importance of these skills, especially for a coastal municipality like Bacnotan. She noted that such abilities are crucial for effective response during emergencies. The initiative also supports youth development and encourages community service among young Bacnotaneans.

Vice Mayor Francis Fontanilla and Municipal Youth Development Officer Marc Jandel Buccat were also present at the training. The LGU plans to expand the Nippers Program to include more youth and further strengthen Bacnotan’s safety initiatives.
