ELYU Herald - The Pulse of La Union

According to the Provincial Government of La Union, the municipality of Bagulin was established through a combination of indigenous cultural history and formal administrative shifts. The town transitioned from being part of the Mountain Province to becoming a recognized municipality within La Union in 1963.

Local oral tradition attributes the name of the town to a legendary figure named Bagulin, the son of an Igorot hunter and a lowland woman. Historically, the area was inhabited by the Kankanaey people and was under the jurisdiction of Benguet during the early American colonial period starting in 1903.

In 1922, a bilateral agreement between regional governors moved the administrative control of the territory to the Province of La Union. This change integrated the upland community into the provincial governance structure.

Today, the town is recognized for maintaining its indigenous traditions and supporting a local economy centered on the production of soft-brooms, locally known as walis tambo. These industries remain a primary source of livelihood for residents in the mountainous region.
