Brief History and Facts
Bauang celebrates decades of agricultural success as the Fruit Basket of the North.
ELYU Herald - The Pulse of La Union
According to the Provincial Government of La Union, the municipality of Bauang is officially recognized as the pioneer of grape farming in the Philippines. This designation follows the successful establishment of commercial viticulture in the region, which has earned the town the title of the “Fruit Basket of the North.”
Commercial grape production in Bauang began in 1972 when agriculturalist Avelino Lomboy founded the Lomboy Farm. Despite early concerns that the tropical climate would not support grapevines, the farm proved that commercial cultivation was viable, creating a foundation for a local industry that has operated for over 40 years.
These early efforts led to the growth of several family-owned businesses, such as the Gapuz Grape Farm. These sites now serve as the primary drivers for the town’s expanding grape-picking tourism sector.
The local government is currently using these agricultural successes to support initiatives that aim to establish Bauang as a permanent center for agri-tourism in Northern Luzon. By promoting these farms, the municipality intends to sustain the economic impact of the grape industry for the local community.
