Birdwatching activity in La Union showcases the province's diverse avian species
According to the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), a birdwatching activity on March 6, 2026, documented a significant diversity of bird species. The event, held as part of World Wildlife Day, involved approximately 40 participants including nature enthusiasts and environmental advocates.
The activity took place in two locations within La Union: the forest area outside the Naguilian Watershed Forest Reserve in Naguilian and the mangrove wetland of Bauang Bakawan Eco Park in Bauang. These locations were chosen to showcase the province’s varied natural habitats.
In Naguilian, 26 bird species were recorded with a total of 65 individual birds, including notable sightings of the Gray-faced Buzzard and the Philippine Serpent Eagle. The mangrove area in Bauang documented 12 bird species and 31 bird counts, featuring waterbirds such as the White-winged Tern and Great Egret.
Endemic species like the Scale-feathered Malkoha and Philippine Hanging Parrot were observed, alongside migratory birds such as the Brown Shrike and Arctic Warbler. The presence of these diverse species indicates a healthy ecosystem within La Union, serving as bioindicators of clean water and undisturbed natural environments.
Participants included representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office - La Union, Region 1 EcoBird Guides (BILLIT Org), and the Wild Bird Photographers of the Philippines. The PGLU highlighted this event as a reflection of its commitment to environmental stewardship and conservation efforts in the province.
