According to the Philippine News Agency (PNA), a newly established tourist rest area has served over 1,000 visitors and supported 30 local small businesses since its opening in May 2026. The facility provides travelers with free amenities while offering regional merchants a rent-free space to showcase their goods.
The facility is located in Naguilian, La Union, and was built through a partnership between the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the local government unit. April Glo Banayat, an administrative staff member of the Naguilian local government, stated that the rest area features restrooms, charging stations, and lounge areas for group travelers and residents.
The site also hosts 30 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) representing various barangays. Featured products include Bacagan bamboo handicrafts, Magungunay labtang baskets, local food items, and basi, a traditional fermented sugarcane wine.
Jeffrey Patacsil, the supervising administrative officer of Naguilian, explained that the local government partnered with cooperatives to ensure quality control. The processing center was established by the local government using equipment supplied by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). Local officials are currently preparing the necessary documents to export the traditional sugarcane wine to meet high demand from overseas Filipino communities.
