ELYU Herald - The Pulse of La Union
According to historical records, City of San Fernando, the capital of La Union, was founded in 1786 and named after King Ferdinand of Spain. Originally a settlement called Pindangan, it was established by communities seeking refuge from coastal raids. The city was granted cityhood in 1998, becoming the first in La Union and the administrative center for Region I.
City of San Fernando serves as a major transit point for buses traveling between Manila and Laoag City. Its strategic location, approximately 270 kilometers north of Metro Manila, makes it easily accessible by a five to six-hour drive. The city hosts many national government agencies, reinforcing its role as the administrative capital of Region I.
Visitors can explore various attractions including the Pindangan Ruins, La Union Botanical Garden, and Ma-Cho Temple. Transportation within the city is facilitated by jeepneys and 24-hour tricycles, with the city plaza acting as a central hub for public utility vehicles.
The City Fiesta is celebrated annually from March 7 to March 20, featuring the Feast of Saint William the Hermit on February 10 and the Ms. City of San Fernando Pageant Night on the fiesta’s final day. Local culinary offerings include Halo-Halo, Chinese Cuisine, and seafood.
For shopping, the La Union Trade Center offers souvenirs. SEAIR provides flights between Manila and San Fernando City on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Accommodation options range from hotels to motels, catering to various budgets.
