According to the PIA, a weekend market has been launched to provide local livelihood groups with a new platform to sell their products. The initiative began on March 14 through a partnership between the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office I, SM Foundation Inc., and SM City La Union.
The project aims to help community-based entrepreneurs in La Union expand their market reach and increase their income. Six Sustainable Livelihood Program Associations (SLPAs) from the province are participating. They are showcasing and selling locally-made goods, including fresh produce and homemade food items.
Participants are beneficiaries of the DSWD’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps). This program provides financial aid to low-income households.
Emily Tucay of the Aringay Veggies Agriculture Cooperative stated that the program has helped make their products more widely known and appreciated. She expressed gratitude for the platform provided to local cooperatives.
According to SM City La Union, the market helps promote products from small entrepreneurs, generates additional income, and connects them with more customers. Drake J. Lim, mall manager, noted that the participating micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are graduates of the SM Foundation’s Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) program. This program offers training and market access to farmers and agripreneurs.
The weekend market operates every Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Shoppers are encouraged to support local communities by purchasing these products.
