According to the Provincial Government of La Union, a new septage treatment facility was officially inaugurated on January 24, 2025, to process household and commercial wastewater in compliance with national clean water laws. The joint infrastructure project aims to prevent environmental contamination by treating sewage before it is safely discharged or reused for agricultural irrigation.
Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David and San Juan Mayor Arturo P. Valdriz led the inauguration ceremony in Barangay Sinapangan, San Juan, La Union. The facility was built to address the rising volume of wastewater in San Juan, which experiences high tourist arrivals as a major coastal destination.
Under the partnership, the provincial government assisted with the initial feasibility study and construction funding, while the municipal government provided the land. The facility operates in compliance with Republic Act 9275, also known as the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004.
The project is part of the province’s ongoing environmental campaign to ensure that local tourism growth does not lead to environmental degradation.
