According to the PIA and the National Food Authority (NFA), the government broke ground on a new 84.8-million-peso agricultural warehouse on February 24 to secure national food reserves and stabilize market prices. The agency is constructing this facility to provide free grain drying and milling services, which will help reduce crop losses after harvest.

The new facility is located in Barangay Damortis, Sto. Tomas, La Union. The project is being built under a land-use agreement with the Provincial Government of La Union, which allowed the NFA to use provincial land for the construction.

Celerina Capones, branch manager of the NFA-La Union Branch Office, stated that the project aims to support the productivity and income of local farmers. Once operational, the facility will feature four drying units with a combined capacity to process 600 bags of rice per batch, alongside a mill that can process 10 tons of rice per hour.

Liza Balagot, acting regional manager of NFA Ilocos, explained that this project is part of a larger 237-million-peso regional budget. This budget also funds similar storage facilities in Rosales, Pangasinan, and Dingras, Ilocos Norte, to expand government storage capacity in the Ilocos Region.

Joey Pimentel, NFA acting assistant administrator for finance and administration, highlighted that the facility will help protect consumers against price fluctuations. The NFA targets to complete the construction within 240 days.
